Last night was as good as it could have been. 183 was my weight, so it could have been much worse. That left we with 46 whacks though, which still sucked. Afterwards, Wife and I were discussing the paddle, and paddle dynamics. Her current weapon of choice is an Oak paddle of 1/2" thick, ~12" total length, with the business end a flat, 'rounded rectangular' 6W"x7L", leaving a ~5" handle, with 5, 1" holes drilled in it, and a nice gloss poly coat. One thing about this paddle is that it really stings. But...(much to her dismay) it doesn't seem to produce the long term after effects that she is looking for. She wants a reminder in place when I start drooling over the chocolate frosted donuts. And to be honest, within 5 minutes of the completion, I'm pretty much back to normal with very little after affects, and no obvious pain, markings or bruises. In an attempt to alleviate her displeasure, I'm going to try build her a new paddle to produce the outcome which she desires (unfortunately, mostly to my detriment).
I'm actually not sure why it doesn't hurt much after, because it sure is a stinger when she is using it. I was speculating that the surface area on it may be too wide and distributing the impact, so there isn't as much deep impact to produce significant damage, it is mostly just slapping. In addition the flat surface may also be diffusing the impact as well over her target as opposed to focusing it. I'm thinking that a slightly rounded surface across the width of the paddle may serve to produce a deeper impact. The holes were added in an attempt to quiet the paddle, although I don't know if this actually had that particular effect, and I'm not sure if I am going to add them again.
So the plan is to try to produce a new Oak paddle with 4" width, and 8-10"L and the 5" handle with one side flat and the other side slightly rounded across the width. I don't know if I want it too long, as it may not gain anything if the surface area is roughly the same as the other one. I'll probably also increase the center line width to ~3/4" and taper down to 1/2" along the edge. Should give it a bit more bulk for her but be comfortable to use...well at least for her.
